The Kyoto Chair, by Radius
Designed by Ayoe Vallentin
The Kyoto Chair
KYOTO was created with the traditional Japanese art of paper folding in mind - Origami.
Practicing the art of folding paper was the fundamental basis for the creation of the advanced folded lamination technique used for the shell of the KYOTO chair. It allows multi-dimensional curves of the plywood thus offering the best seating comfort possible.
KYOTO is the result of persistent and repeated experiments with small paper models of the sophisticated shell based on the assumption that what can be folded in paper can also be moulded in plywood. As a natural consequence, this fine chair which utilises advanced wood techniques combined with an understanding of the art of folding paper, was given the Japanese name KYOTO.
The light-weight float of the KYOTO shell above the thin metal frame is an expression of the designer’s inspiration by the flying roof-tops of Japanese tea houses, along with her appreciation for elegance and refinement.A combination of aesthetic and ergonomic refinement will ensure KYOTO is an added benefit to any room or area demanding the highest architectural standards. KYOTO is the ideal choice for conference halls or rooms, staff canteens, private homes and numerous other places where aesthetics, ergonomics and build quality are key considerations.
KYOTO is truly a breath of fresh air, in a pure spirit that unites Japanese refinement with Scandinavian design talent.
Designer Profile
Ayoe Vallentin (1960 - 2008)
Ayoe Vallentin graduated from School of Architecture, Department of furniture and rooms in 1988. She achieved a highly respected accolade for her daring play with free organic forms and her relentless insistence that all details and challenges when designing furniture have to be resolved in the best way possible.
Ayoe was, throughout its operation, an active and significant member of artist group OCTO who in 1998 received the Georg Jensen Prize. OCTO combines an unmistakably contemporary tone with a classical underpinning, which is characteristic of Danish design over the last two hundred years. Meanwhile, the group expresses a multicultural aspect that provides associations with Islamic patterns, African fabric prints, Chinese calligraphy and Japanese origami.
Ayoe also worked for some years as a highly respected teacher at The School of Architecture design department.
As a designer, Ayoe produced a series of furniture statements with great artistic strength and consistency. Her work expresses it's message at a high aesthetic level and helps to set the standard for subsequent Danish furniture designers.
